Bharata Natyam is an Indian classical dance form that is a tradition that dates back to ancient times. It was developed from Tamil Nadu, which is situated within the Southernmost region of India. Bharata Natyam is renowned for its distinctive expressions of hands and eyes and foot beats.

It was first practiced in Hindu temples performed by dancers of women in order to give an offering to the god of the temple. Bharata Natyam is a combination of the words Bhava, Raga (Music), Tala(Rhythm), and Natya. It is believed that it embodies music in visual form, as an act of ritual or dedication.

There are five kinds of dances that represent each of the elements. Bharata Natyam is a dance that burns. The three principal components of this dance include Nritta (rhythmic aspects), Natya, (mime or dance that has an edgy flair) and Nritya. Lines flowing and smooth are balanced with masculine moves and the stomping.

Poetry and texts from the earliest times recount the rich dance and music styles that were flourishing at the time. These traditions were seamlessly interspersed into the culture and practices of religion.

A perfect Bharata Natyam dancer is agile and strong, courageous, talented, imaginative, and hard-working. They are also artistic and gorgeous. They were usually Devadasi, a woman who had married the temple or the god of the temple. They were extremely knowledgeable and revered.
