What is Melasma Treatment?

Melasma is a skin condition that is caused by the overproduction of melanin, which is a natural pigment found in the skin. The most common form of melasma is brown or black patches on the skin that may enlarge with age. Other forms of melasma include red, silver, and light-colored patches. Types of Melasma Treatment

It can be done in the form of sunscreens or topical light therapies such as blue LED light therapy or lasers.  

Causes of Melasma

There are many potential causes of melasma, but most cases are due to sun exposure and genetics. Sun exposure is the number one cause of melasma, and people with darker skin are especially at risk. Melasma can also occur as a result of hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy or menopause.

Some foods and drinks can also cause melasma. Coffee and alcohol contain caffeine and alcohol, which can both irritate your skin and lead to melasma. Other potential causes of melasma include:

– using too much tanning lotion or sunscreens

– using certain birth control pills (such as the Pill) 

– having a family history of melanoma

– being fair-skinned
